“Slovakia Train Collision Leaves 11 Seriously Injured”

Date:

Two trains collided in western Slovakia, causing serious injuries to 11 individuals, as confirmed by officials. The incident occurred near Pezinok in the Bratislava region when Train Tatran 620, en route from Kosice to Bratislava, crashed into REX 1814 heading from Nitra to the capital. Reports suggest that one train disregarded a red signal and rear-ended the other.

Following the collision, a spokesperson from University Hospital Bratislava mentioned that two patients were undergoing surgery, with expectations of more surgeries needed. Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok stated that 11 people sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized, while numerous others suffered minor injuries among the approximately 800 passengers, including many students.

Both train operators tested negative for alcohol and drugs, according to a representative from the Bratislava regional police. Ivan Bednarok, the head of Slovak railway service ZSR, described the incident as exceptional, indicating a violation where one train crossed a red signal, resulting in a collision with the second express train at a speed exceeding 100 km/h.

Emergency responders, including over 70 firefighters and 60 police officers, rushed to the scene. Evacuation buses from the Prison and Judicial Guard Corps were employed to transport passengers to safety. A passenger recounted the harrowing experience of the collision during a journey from Piestany to Bratislava.

Prime Minister Robert Fico urged the public to prioritize the injured and avoid spreading rumors or animosity, pledging government support and convening an extraordinary meeting the following day. The state-owned rail operator ZSSK confirmed ongoing coordination with authorities and emergency services to address the situation and investigate the incident thoroughly.

Train services in the affected area experienced disruptions, with significant delays anticipated. This incident comes shortly after another train accident in eastern Slovakia on October 13, where 91 individuals were injured, some critically.
