A woman working at a daycare facility has been taken into custody and formally accused of causing harm to a three-month-old baby by breaking the infant’s arm. The incident reportedly occurred at Lily Pad Day Care in Fond du Lac.
Ashley Karschnick, aged 32, allegedly lost her temper when the baby cried every time she handled her, leading her to forcefully slam the child against a crib, resulting in the baby’s arm being fractured. Karschnick is now facing a felony charge of child abuse for recklessly causing harm in this situation.
Following the baby’s admission to a children’s hospital with a fractured arm, medical records indicated a specific type of fracture consistent with physical abuse. An investigation by law enforcement involved interviews and surveillance footage analysis, revealing Karschnick’s escalating frustration throughout the day.
The critical moment when the baby’s arm broke was captured on video around 12:30 p.m., showing Karschnick lifting and throwing the infant into the crib with significant force. Despite subsequent attempts to comfort the crying baby, the situation only worsened, with the baby’s arm visibly affected.
Although video evidence contradicted her account, Karschnick denied the allegations, attributing the incident to accidental contact with the crib. She attempted to explain the baby’s cries by suggesting they were a reaction to her touch.
Karschnick is currently detained on a $2,500 bond and sought permission at a recent court hearing to access public places where children are present, but the judge maintained the existing bond conditions.
