“Amazon Web Services Outage Causes Digital Chaos”

Date:

Numerous websites and applications are experiencing outages today due to a widespread Amazon Web Services (AWS) disruption. AWS, which underpins the infrastructure of many online platforms, is currently facing technical difficulties, causing a significant number of digital services to malfunction.

Impacted services include popular platforms like Snapchat, Slack, Ring, Signal, Virgin Media, BT, EE, and Sky, as well as the online portals and applications of leading UK banks such as Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland. Additionally, the HMRC website has been inaccessible today.

AWS has acknowledged the issue and reported progress in resolving it, stating that most services are gradually returning to normal. A recent update indicated, “We are seeing improvements across most affected AWS Services. Global services relying on US-EAST-1 have also been restored. Our team is diligently working towards complete resolution and will provide further updates as available.”

In a related development, Downdetector recorded a surge in problem reports on Monday morning, with over 2,681 incidents related to AWS. An HMRC spokesperson mentioned the impact on their online services due to the AWS disruption and advised customers to call back later if non-urgent, given the high call volume.

Similarly, a representative from Lloyds Bank confirmed service disruptions linked to AWS, expressing regret over the inconvenience caused to customers and assuring efforts to restore full service promptly.
