“DWP Updates PIP System: Review to Conclude by Autumn 2026”

Date:

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is set to provide an update on the ongoing review of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) system. PIP is a benefit aimed at individuals requiring additional support due to health conditions. The proposed changes to the PIP scoring system were abandoned by the Labour party following strong opposition from MPs, disability organizations, and activists.

The government is currently reassessing the PIP claims process, with a final decision anticipated in autumn 2026. Sir Stephen Timms, the Minister for Social Security and Disability, is overseeing the review, focusing on the comprehensive PIP assessment procedure.

Most PIP applicants are required to undergo a health assessment via phone, video call, or in-person session to determine their eligibility. Sir Stephen Timms recently provided an update on the Timms Review in response to inquiries from Parliament.

Conservative MP Bradley Thomas inquired about the timeline for reviewing the PIP assessment process and inclusivity of disabled individuals, caregivers, and the wider public in the review. Sir Stephen Timms stated in a written response that the Timms Review will be collaboratively developed with disabled individuals, advocacy groups, healthcare professionals, caregivers, experts, MPs, and others. The leadership group overseeing the review will predominantly consist of disabled individuals to ensure diverse perspectives are considered.

Meetings have been held with various stakeholders to gather feedback and input on the co-production aspect of the Timms Review, with further updates expected soon. The review is projected to conclude by autumn 2026, after which recommendations will be presented to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions for potential legislative and non-legislative actions.

The focus remains on engaging a wide range of voices and opinions to shape the future direction of the PIP system, with the aim of improving support for those in need.
