“UK Airline Eastern Airways Nears Administration, Flights Grounded”

Date:

Eastern Airways, a UK airline, is on the verge of going into administration, resulting in the cancellation of its flights. The company has taken steps to appoint an administrator, indicating its imminent entry into administration, which initiates a temporary freeze preventing creditors from pursuing legal actions against the business for ten days. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has verified the suspension of operations by the airline.

Established in 1997, Eastern Airways operates flights to various domestic airports in the UK, such as Aberdeen, Humberside, London Gatwick, Newquay, Teesside International, and Wick. Previously, the airline also served international destinations, including Paris, France, catering to approximately 1.3 million passengers annually. The Mirror has reached out to Eastern Airways for their input.

Selina Chadha, Consumer & Markets Director at the Civil Aviation Authority, advised passengers against heading to the airport for Eastern Airways flights as they have all been canceled. Affected customers are encouraged to visit the Civil Aviation Authority’s website for the most recent updates.

For travelers whose bookings are part of a packaged holiday, the holiday provider will arrange an alternative flight or offer a full refund. In cases where the flight is not part of a packaged holiday and is subsequently canceled, passengers may need to secure a new flight at their own expense. Depending on the policy, affected individuals may be eligible to file a claim through their travel insurance for scheduled airline failure coverage or via their debit or credit card provider.

Eastern Airways reported a net loss of £19.7 million for the fiscal year ending in March 2024, with a total debt increase to £25.97 million and a profit decline to £454,000 from £1.55 million the prior year. This development follows the recent collapse of budget Icelandic airline Fly PLAY, which went into administration, leading to the immediate cancellation of all flights.

Furthermore, Usher Travel Worldchoice, an independent travel agent, ceased trading earlier this month. Gavin Morton, a Director at Usher Travel Worldchoice for 35 out of the 60 years the business operated, expressed deep sorrow over the decision to close the company.

Notably, Balkan Holidays Ltd, Jetline Travel, and Great Little Escapes LLP have also shut down this year. Stay updated on money-saving tips and top offers by subscribing to the Mirror Money newsletter.
