“High Pressure System Threatens Freeview Signal”

Date:

Some households aiming to watch The 1% Club or Strictly Come Dancing may face a challenging week ahead. Unyielding high pressure systems are lingering above the UK, leading to potential signal disruptions for Freeview users. This weather pattern is expected to persist, causing viewing disturbances well into the following week.

According to a statement on the Freeview website, “Viewers nationwide could experience interruptions in their TV reception from Friday the 10th to Wednesday the 15th of October 2025, attributed to the high pressure affecting Freeview signals.”

Despite its unconventional nature, Britain encounters these bouts of high pressure intermittently throughout the year, posing issues for TV broadcasts.

As per the BBC, high pressure can trigger two main problems. Firstly, a weaker signal may be received as the local transmitter signal elevates higher into the atmosphere. Secondly, distant transmitter signals could interfere with reception quality.

With the ongoing weather conditions until Wednesday, October 15, Freeview customers are likely to face frustration. However, attempting to adjust settings is not advised during this period, as Freeview warns against retuning TVs until the high-pressure system dissipates.

Fortunately, there are strategies to circumvent these challenges. For instance, users with internet-enabled TVs featuring Freeview Play can switch to this online service instead of relying on the aerial signal. Additionally, a new alternative called Freely, linked to the creators of Freeview and Freesat, utilizes broadband for content delivery, unaffected by weather conditions. This service offers access to over 40 channels with live and on-demand content.

Moreover, Sky provides online viewing options through products like Sky Glass TVs and Stream box, both utilizing broadband rather than traditional satellite dishes for content delivery.
