Former President Donald Trump announced Kirk’s passing on social media, lauding him as “Great, and even legendary.” Trump later released a video from the White House honoring Kirk as a “martyr for truth and freedom” while attributing the violence to the “radical left.”
The incident prompted swift condemnation from both Democratic and Republican figures, denouncing the violence that occurred. Utah Governor Spencer Cox labeled the event as a “political assassination,” describing it as a dark and tragic day for the state and the nation.
Inderjeet Parmar, a professor of International Politics at City St George’s, University of London, expressed grave concerns about the shooting, viewing it as a troubling escalation in a country teetering on the edge of internal conflict. Parmar emphasized the divisive nature of American politics, exacerbated by extreme viewpoints and toxic rhetoric.
The professor highlighted Kirk’s association with far-right ideologies and his involvement in organizing protests related to the 2021 insurrection attempt. President Trump’s portrayal of Kirk as a hero for truth and freedom is expected to fuel further narratives of victimization and political blame.
Most instances of political violence in the U.S. are directed towards left-leaning individuals and anti-fascist groups, including Democratic Party officials.
