A German FBI agent confessed to covering the court fine for Christian Brueckner, the main suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, allowing him to potentially be released earlier than expected. The agent, known as Rebecca K, revealed herself as the anonymous donor who paid off Brueckner’s £1,300 debt, citing concerns about his human rights. This move may shorten the time available for investigators to build a case against him.
Christian Brueckner has been a person of interest in Madeleine’s disappearance since 2020, although he has not faced any charges. His outstanding fine was anticipated to delay his release, giving authorities a crucial period to gather evidence. Now, there are worries that he might evade authorities, jeopardizing the progress of the investigation.
Rebecca K used to be part of a secretive team monitoring Brueckner but faced professional issues within Germany’s equivalent of the FBI, the Bundeskriminalamt (BKA). She defended her actions by expressing sympathy for Brueckner, believing his rights were violated and likening it to her own experiences with former colleagues.
The fine in question pertained to past offenses like assault, document forgery, and drunken behavior. Initially, Rebecca K acknowledged her payment as a mistake and hinted at retracting it. However, she later confirmed her decision to allow the payment to stand, ensuring Brueckner’s potential early release.
She also admitted that her actions were partly influenced by a grudge against her former team, claiming that helping uncover the truth about her situation was a motivation. Brueckner is currently serving time for the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz, where Madeleine disappeared later on. Additional evidence, including his interest in young blonde girls and questionable online content, has raised suspicions.
Rebecca K also confessed to inadvertently sharing information from the Madeleine case with Brueckner’s legal team, citing it as an honest mistake. However, the BKA refuted her assertions, asserting that she left her position voluntarily and emphasizing the importance of maintaining confidentiality. They warned of legal consequences for false accusations.
Recently, Rebecca K appeared to backtrack on her stance, expressing regret over her decision to pay Brueckner’s fine.
