“Apple Users Urged to Update Devices Against ‘AirBorne’ Threat”

Date:

Attention all Apple device users! It is crucial to promptly update all your gadgets following a recent security discovery by experts at Oligo. They identified vulnerabilities in Apple’s AirPlay technology that could potentially allow hackers to infiltrate phones, tablets, and laptops with harmful malware, labeling the threat as “AirBorne.”

The Oligo Security researchers named the vulnerabilities and attack methods “AirBorne,” as they exploit wireless networks or peer-to-peer connections to gain complete control over devices and launch further attacks. Apple’s AirPlay system, designed for wireless content streaming to speakers and TVs via Wi-Fi, inadvertently provided a gateway for cybercriminals to compromise devices.

Fortunately, Apple has addressed all identified bugs, emphasizing the importance of users ensuring their iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks are running the latest software updates. Alanna Titterington from Kaspersky highlighted the significance of updating all AirPlay-enabled devices to safeguard against potential AirBorne attacks.

To verify your devices are up to date, navigate to Settings, select General, and check for Software Updates. By keeping your devices current with the latest software releases from Apple, you can protect yourself from potential threats. Notably, the risk of a hack occurring is minimal unless the cyber attacker is on the same Wi-Fi network as the targeted user.

Users are advised to exercise caution, especially when connected to public Wi-Fi networks, where the likelihood of an attack is higher. Additional precautions include disabling the AirPlay receiver when not in use, restricting AirPlay access, and adjusting settings to limit AirPlay usage to the “Current User” only.
