Charges Laid: Business Owner Accused in Foreign Worker Mistreatment

Date:

A case has emerged involving a business proprietor who is being charged in connection with the alleged mistreatment of a foreign worker at the Swift Current Husky Travel Centre in southwest Saskatchewan, located approximately 225 kilometers west of Regina. The provincial Ministry of Immigration and Career Training disclosed that the purported infractions occurred between September 2023 and August 2025, spanning nearly two years.

The employer and a numbered company are facing eight charges under Saskatchewan’s foreign worker protection laws. The accusations include levying fees for work and exploiting the trust, fear, or lack of knowledge of the foreign worker. These charges are in accordance with the Foreign Worker Recruitment and Immigration Services Act, with additional charges under the Immigration Services Act, which superseded the former law in 2024.

The legislation is designed to safeguard immigrants and foreign workers from specific vulnerabilities they may encounter. To bolster this protection, the Immigration Services Act was enacted by the province, enabling fines of up to $750,000 for convicted individual employers and $1,250,000 for corporations. The law prohibits employers from charging foreign workers for job offers, seizing their travel documents, concealing immigration-related details, or using deportation threats.

The initial court hearing for this case is set to take place on Wednesday in Swift Current.
