Prime Minister Mark Carney remains in frequent communication with U.S. President Donald Trump, despite ongoing trade tensions and critical comments from U.S. administration officials. Carney mentioned that recent discussions with Trump have centered on global affairs, particularly the impact of conflicts in Ukraine and Iran on global energy and grain markets.
During a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Calgary, Carney emphasized the importance of maintaining collaboration with the United States on international issues. He confirmed speaking with Trump multiple times in recent days regarding matters concerning Ukraine, Iran, and other global developments.
Following the breakdown of tariff negotiations between Canada and the U.S., both countries imposed tariffs on each other’s goods. The U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on numerous Canadian products, prompting Canada to retaliate with equivalent tariffs on U.S. imports. Subsequently, the Trump administration announced additional tariffs on select Canadian imports and plans to ban others later this month.
Carney refrained from disclosing whether Canada would implement further counter-tariffs on U.S. products, stating that his government is evaluating the recent U.S. measures. Despite the stalled negotiations, Carney expressed optimism about reaching a mutually beneficial agreement with the U.S., asserting Canada’s readiness to secure a fair deal.
Amid disparaging remarks from Trump and key U.S. officials towards Canada, including renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” Carney has criticized such rhetoric as inappropriate. He dismissed the negative comments from the Trump administration as unwarranted and unbecoming.
When questioned about Trump’s continued criticisms of Canada post-negotiation breakdown, Carney declined to speculate on Trump’s motives, emphasizing that the issue is about sovereignty for Canada rather than personal emotions.
