At a recent event called Pumpkinfest in Port Elgin, Ontario, grower Jeff Warner brought his massive 1,711-pound pumpkin in hopes of winning a prize. However, he was ultimately disqualified due to a small soft spot on the pumpkin. Warner was aware of the strict competition rules but decided to participate anyway, making the nine-hour journey with his giant pumpkin.
Despite efforts to address the soft spot along the way, it continued to worsen, leading to disqualification upon arrival at the festival. Judges stated that the hole caused by the soft spot exceeded the allowable size for qualification. The winning pumpkin weighed 1,542 pounds, falling short of Warner’s impressive specimen by nearly 170 pounds.
Although Warner did not take home the top prize, he remains proud of the effort he put into cultivating his giant pumpkin. He spent countless hours caring for it, aiming to surpass his previous records each year. Despite the setback, the attention his pumpkin garnered has been positive, with families stopping by to admire and take photos with the colossal gourd.
Warner has decided to repurpose his disqualified pumpkin by feeding it to polar bears at a habitat located a few hours north of his home. This unique plan will give his giant pumpkin a second purpose after its journey to Pumpkinfest.
