“George Groves: Joshua Should Consider Retirement Without Fury Fight”

Date:

Anthony Joshua has received advice to consider retiring if a matchup with Tyson Fury fails to materialize. The former two-time heavyweight champion has been inactive since his loss to Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium last September. While a rematch with Dubois was expected, Joshua needed more time to recover from minor injuries sustained in their previous fight.

Following the setback against Dubois, Joshua’s future is uncertain, with many speculating about the path ahead for the 35-year-old boxer. George Groves, a former WBA super-middleweight titleholder, believes that Joshua’s options are limited, suggesting that only a bout with Fury remains of significant interest.

Despite this, Groves admitted that the idea of Joshua facing Jake Paul excites him. There have been talks of a potential showdown between the two next year, with Paul openly challenging Joshua and expressing eagerness to fight the boxing legend.

In a recent interview with talkSPORT, Groves mentioned, “A fight with Jake Paul would present a significant financial opportunity for Anthony Joshua with minimal risk involved. However, at this stage of his career, Joshua must weigh the risks and rewards carefully. Personally, I would prefer to see him retire or fight Fury.”

Amidst the speculation surrounding a potential Joshua-Paul clash, Saudi boxing figure Turki Alalshikh revealed discussions with Paul, indicating the American’s willingness to accept a minimal share of the purse for the fight. Alalshikh expressed support for Paul’s contribution to boxing, emphasizing the importance of engaging a younger audience in the sport.

Anthony Taylor, a former sparring partner of Paul, offered advice to the American ahead of a potential matchup with Joshua. Taylor emphasized the importance of movement and strategy, encouraging Paul to approach the fight with confidence and agility. He highlighted the need for Paul to stick and move, avoiding a stationary posture against Joshua to maximize his chances of success.
