Nova Scotia writer Rachel Reid has generously contributed $300,000 to the Annapolis Valley Regional Library in response to the potential closure of five branches. Reid expressed her belief that successful authors in Nova Scotia should utilize their success for societal benefit. The library had previously allocated $80,000 from its reserves to keep the branches operational until September 30. The board had requested additional funding from municipalities to maintain the libraries in Hantsport, Kentville, Lawrencetown, Port Williams, and Middleton until the end of the 2026-27 fiscal year, with Reid’s donation ensuring their continued operation.
Library CEO Julia Merritt acknowledged the significance of Reid’s donation, emphasizing that the funds would predominantly cover staffing costs. The library described Reid’s gift as one of the most substantial private contributions in its history. Reid emphasized the importance of properly funding libraries, citing her personal experience of being inspired to become an author through library resources.
While Reid’s donation is valuable, the library stressed the ongoing necessity for increased public funding and robust partnerships to sustain library services. Nova Scotia officials acknowledged Reid’s contribution as a temporary measure to allow time for developing a sustainable operating model. The Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism, and Heritage reiterated its commitment to supporting public libraries and expressed gratitude for the community’s support in maintaining library services.
Reid’s donation highlights the critical need for public awareness and support for library funding issues. She emphasized the essential role of public libraries in communities and encouraged others to contribute where possible. The library and government officials are working collaboratively to ensure continued access to vibrant public libraries across the region. Rachel Reid will participate in a special event celebrating the significance of libraries and community engagement in the upcoming month.
