In a recent move, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” sparking discontent among various American officials, including members of the House of Representatives. Democratic representatives Tim Kennedy, Joe Morelle, and Debbie Dingell have introduced the Hands Off Our Great Lakes Act to reverse the name change of Lake Ontario and prevent any future renaming of Great Lakes.
This development follows Google’s adjustment of its maps to display Lake Ontario as “Lake America” for U.S. users, which stirred controversy. While Trump reportedly urged Apple to follow suit, MapQuest has declared its intention to retain the original name. Kennedy, whose constituency borders Canada, expressed concerns about the name change during an interview, emphasizing the need to revoke the executive order.
Addressing criticisms that view Trump’s actions as mere provocations, Kennedy highlighted the President’s pattern of behavior, calling it dangerous and detrimental to the country. He emphasized the need for accountability and criticized the administration’s policies, particularly in relation to trade disputes with Canada and global tariffs.
Reflecting on the historical ties between the U.S. and Canada, Kennedy underscored the strong friendship and neighborly relations between the two countries. He highlighted the extensive economic partnership and cultural interconnectedness, stressing the importance of preserving this bond despite political challenges.
Looking ahead to the upcoming elections, Kennedy expressed confidence in the American people’s response and anticipated a significant shift in the House of Representatives majority towards the Democrats. He cited previous bipartisan efforts to challenge the President’s decisions and expressed optimism in garnering support for legislative measures against Trump’s policies in the future.
