Russian airstrikes in Kyiv and the surrounding area resulted in 12 fatalities and multiple injuries early Tuesday, marking the sixth consecutive day of attacks on the Ukrainian capital. The ongoing full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia has seen an escalation in air assaults in recent months, particularly as Russian advancements on the battlefield have slowed significantly.
Over the past five days, Kyiv and its vicinity have been besieged by swarms of advanced drones, causing casualties, property damage, and disruption to daily life. These newer jet engine-powered drones have proven challenging to intercept, exacerbating the impact of the relentless attacks that have forced millions to contend with lengthy air-raid alerts daily.
The assault continued with more explosions reported in the capital on Tuesday morning, with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha noting that Russian drones and ballistic missiles had targeted residential areas and vital railway infrastructure in the intense overnight strikes. Sybiha urged Ukraine’s allies to intensify economic pressure on Russia and explore utilizing Russia’s frozen assets abroad to bolster Ukraine’s defense efforts.
In the latest wave of violence, eight individuals, including railway workers, lost their lives in Kyiv during overnight attacks, with additional casualties reported in a daytime drone strike that ignited a fire in a high-rise apartment building. Furthermore, outside Kyiv in Boryspil, four individuals were killed and 13 others injured in an assault that struck a residential structure and other locations, including an Indian citizen among the deceased.
The Russian onslaught extended to a border crossing with Romania in Odesa, leaving numerous families without electricity, as confirmed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Amid the intensified daytime strikes disrupting life in Kyiv, the Russian air force launched over 2,800 jet-powered drones in August alone, reflecting a substantial increase from the previous month.
Additionally, Ukraine has retaliated by targeting Russian oil refineries and logistical hubs, including warehouses of e-commerce firms. Reports from Russian regional governors highlighted incidents of fires in Ust-Luga’s port area and civilian infrastructure damage in the Samara region, home to significant oil processing plants.
As the conflict persists, Ukrainian forces managed to intercept five ballistic missiles overnight and recently received a limited supply of Patriot interceptors. With both sides engaging in retaliatory strikes, Estonia reported brief airspace violations by Ukrainian drones, emphasizing the critical need for air defense support for Ukraine.
Peace negotiations have hit a roadblock this year, with Washington’s focus shifting to other global issues, while Ukraine remains steadfast in rejecting Russian territorial demands. President Zelenskyy disclosed a productive discussion with U.S. envoys and expressed intentions to finalize plans for an official visit to Ukraine.
