The deadline for individuals to declare their candidacy in the upcoming municipal election in Ontario is rapidly approaching. As of now, potential candidates have until August 21 at 2 p.m. ET to submit their applications for positions such as mayor, councillor, or school board trustee for the election scheduled for October 26.
In Hamilton, unless there are any changes within the next four days, Ward 5 and more than half of the school board trustee positions will likely be uncontested. Ward 5 stands out as the sole ward in the city with just one candidate registered, the incumbent Coun. Matt Francis, who has served since 2022. Similarly, a significant number of seats at the public and Catholic boards have only one candidate registered.
In the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB), wards with single candidates include 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 14, and 15, with several of these candidates being current trustees. Additionally, at the Catholic board, five out of nine seats have only one candidate running, including Wards 1, 2, and 15, where the current trustee was acclaimed in 2022. Other wards with lone candidates include 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, and 14.
For a list of individuals who have registered as candidates in Hamilton, you can refer to CBC Hamilton’s comprehensive coverage. August 21 is also the final day for candidates to make any adjustments to their candidacy, including withdrawals. Notably, a few candidates have already opted to withdraw, such as current Ward 10 Coun. Jeff Beattie, who has decided to run for the Progressive Conservatives in the Hamilton East—Stoney Creek provincial byelection on September 3.
