Gas prices in Canada are on the decline, offering relief to drivers as a seasonal shift occurs. Earlier this week, the national average price of gas rose to 194.5 cents per litre before dropping overnight to 186.9 cents per litre as of Friday. According to Dan McTeague, the president of Canadians for Affordable Energy, this fluctuation is typical as the transition from summer-blend gasoline to winter blend takes place in mid-September. The winter blend is designed to prevent fuel-line freezing and optimize engine performance in colder temperatures.
McTeague anticipates a further slight decrease in gas prices over the weekend. However, he notes that significant price improvements are unlikely without increased oil, diesel, jet fuel, and gasoline supplies in global markets. The ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, particularly disruptions in oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb Strait, have led to a surge in oil prices, reaching around $104 US per barrel for Brent crude oil.
While gasoline prices are decreasing, diesel prices are soaring across Canada. The average cost of diesel stood at $2.751 per litre, with variations in different cities such as Calgary and Vancouver. The rising diesel costs have implications beyond the pump, affecting transportation of goods and food supplies. Tej Dulat from the Canada Truck Operators Association warns that increased diesel prices could lead to higher consumer prices as companies pass on the added fuel expenses to customers.
The fluctuating fuel prices have a cascading effect on various sectors, potentially impacting grocery prices and overall consumer spending in the coming months.
