A recent peer-reviewed study highlights a lesser-known risk faced by cocoa production amidst the abundance of Halloween chocolate offerings in stores nationwide. According to Anna Lea Albright, an environmental fellow at Harvard University, heavy rainfall poses a significant threat to cocoa cultivation, overshadowing concerns about heat and drought.
The study focused on Ghana, the world’s second-largest cocoa producer, and revealed that extreme rainfall during the flowering period has a more detrimental impact on cocoa yields than temperature fluctuations. Excessive rain can harm the delicate flowers and young pods of cocoa trees, leading to lower production levels and increased susceptibility to fungal diseases like black pod disease.
Climate change exacerbates these challenges, with warmer air holding more moisture and intensifying rainfall patterns during the wet season. Despite the potential role of El Niño in reducing extreme rainfall risks, West Africa faces the dual challenge of excessive rain followed by periods of drought, complicating cocoa farming efforts.
To address these issues, experts suggest interventions such as fungicide application and improved drainage systems to mitigate fungal diseases spread by heavy rains. However, the study also highlights non-climatic risks like aging trees and illegal gold mining as additional threats to cocoa production.
As the future of cocoa farming in West Africa grows increasingly uncertain due to climate shocks, concerns arise about the viability of smallholder farming practices. Some experts predict a shift towards cocoa-free chocolate alternatives, driven by the need for a more resilient and sustainable supply chain. Major players in the food industry, such as Nestlé, have already ventured into cocoa-free chocolate production to meet changing consumer demands and address the challenges faced by cocoa farmers.
Despite fluctuating cocoa prices and supply chain disruptions, experts emphasize the importance of supporting smallholder farmers in West Africa who have historically borne the brunt of chocolate’s underpricing. The study underscores the urgent need for sustainable solutions to safeguard cocoa production in the face of evolving climate conditions and economic pressures.
