“Fatal Collisions Spur Call for Safety Upgrades”

Date:

A recent tragic accident claimed the life of a 69-year-old motorcyclist on Highway 627 in Parkland County, sparking concerns among local residents for enhanced safety measures. This incident marks the fourth fatal collision on the highway in the past year, highlighting a pressing issue for the community.

According to Parkland RCMP, there have been a total of 38 accidents on Highway 627 in the last year, with five fatalities resulting from four of these collisions. Robert Oliver, a long-time resident and retired veteran, expressed worries about the safety of the highway, particularly at various intersections where he believes the absence of advanced green lights and speeding drivers pose significant risks.

In an effort to address these concerns, Oliver reached out twice to the Ministry of Transportation and Economic Corridors, advocating for the installation of advanced green lights at key intersections like Highway 627 and Highway 60. Tragically, a recent collision at this junction claimed the lives of two Stony Plain residents, underscoring the urgency for safety improvements.

Kevin McGillivray, the detachment commander at Parkland RCMP, acknowledged the rise in fatal collisions on Highway 627 compared to previous years. He emphasized collaborative efforts with law enforcement agencies to enhance enforcement actions along the highway, particularly focusing on reducing accidents and ensuring road safety for all commuters.

As Highway 627 falls under the jurisdiction of Alberta Transportation, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Transportation and Economic Corridors expressed condolences to those affected by the recent accidents. The ministry is actively engaging with policing partners to investigate the circumstances of these incidents and explore potential safety enhancements based on the findings of RCMP investigations.
