The highly anticipated El Niño has arrived, and it is already proving to be significant. Earlier this year, climate experts had predicted the development of an El Niño in the central Pacific region. Over time, more models indicated the likelihood of a strong or “super” El Niño, although scientists cautioned that it was still early to confirm. In its monthly update in June, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued an El Niño advisory, confirming the presence of warmer conditions in the specific Pacific Ocean area known as Niño 3.4.
For an official El Niño designation, temperatures in the Niño 3.4 region must be 0.5 C above average. Currently, ocean temperatures are almost 2 C higher than average, setting a record high for this time of year. Climate scientist Zeke Hausfather from Berkeley Earth noted that the region is already experiencing temperatures above 2 C, indicating the potential for a very strong or “super” El Niño.
El Niño and La Niña are part of the natural climate cycle known as the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), affecting the Pacific Ocean. La Niña brings cooler temperatures, while El Niño brings warmer conditions. Forecasts suggest that the El Niño peak may occur in October, with some models indicating November or December as more likely.
The most robust El Niño in recent years was in 2015-2016, with an ocean temperature anomaly of around 2.75 C. Meteorologist Nat Johnson from NOAA’s geophysical fluid dynamics laboratory highlighted the rapid transition from La Niña to El Niño this year. The swift change raises questions about the factors driving this shift.
There is speculation about whether climate change could be influencing the intensity of the current El Niño, with forecasts suggesting a peak temperature anomaly of around 3.6 C. However, the role of climate change in these extreme events remains a topic of ongoing scientific discussion.
One concerning impact of the strong El Niño is potential food security issues in tropical regions due to expected drought conditions. In Canada, the winter months are predicted to be milder but drier, raising concerns about increased wildfire risks in Western Canada. Experts emphasize the need to prepare for significant impacts, highlighting the serious implications of El Niño on agriculture, natural ecosystems, and ocean environments.
