“Reviving Elms: Scientists in Vermont Fight Dutch Elm Disease”

Scientists in Vermont have been conducting a unique experiment throughout the summer by intentionally infecting thousands of trees with Dutch elm disease. This initiative, led by researchers from the U.S. Forest Service and the Nature Conservancy, aims to evaluate the potential resistance of a new generation of elms bred from disease survivors. The fungal disease, transmitted by bark beetles, has been devastating elm populations across the U.S. and Canada for many years. The ultimate goal is to restore areas once abundant with majestic elms, including city streets and riverbanks.

Gus Goodwin, a senior conservation planner at The Nature Conservancy, expressed the profound impact of losing these trees over the years. The experiment in Vermont, along with similar efforts in Canada, seeks to develop solutions to combat Dutch elm disease as it poses a growing threat in new regions.

The Elm City of Fredericton, once renowned for its elegant elms, witnessed a significant decline in the 1960s and 70s due to the disease, resulting in the loss of approximately 10,000 trees, with only around 1,000 mature elms remaining today. Professor Anthony Taylor from the University of New Brunswick has observed the disease’s resurgence, affecting even previously resilient trees on his property.

The disease, which rapidly blocks the water-conducting tissue in elms, leading to their demise within a few years of infection, is primarily spread by bark beetles laying eggs in infected trees. To manage Dutch elm disease, infected trees must be promptly removed to prevent further spread.

In the past, a practice known as “sanitization” involved removing healthy elms near infected trees, inadvertently impacting the overall resilience of the elm population. Efforts to combat the disease are evolving, emphasizing active management strategies, community involvement, and the preservation of disease-resistant trees.

The threat of Dutch elm disease has extended beyond historical regions, affecting cities like Edmonton and Saskatoon in recent years. Urban foresters are vigilant in responding to infected trees, with a focus on community engagement to limit the disease’s spread through proper tree care practices.

While the battle against Dutch elm disease continues, the importance of preserving mature trees for their environmental benefits, such as shade provision and stormwater absorption, remains crucial. Restoring elm populations offers a promising solution for enhancing ecosystem resilience in the face of climate change challenges.

Ongoing research projects across North America, including the Elm Recovery Project in Guelph and initiatives in Fredericton, aim to enhance resistance to Dutch elm disease through selective breeding and cloning of disease-tolerant trees. These long-term efforts require patience and dedication, with the hope of cultivating a new generation of elms capable of coexisting with the disease, similar to European elms.
