A former participant from the Greek version of the popular TV show “Survivor” is taking legal action against the program’s creators following a tragic boating incident that resulted in the amputation of his leg. Stavros Floros has filed a lawsuit in a Florida court, seeking $100 million in damages.
Floros, now 22 years old, was part of Season 13 of Survivor Greece when the accident occurred during a spearfishing activity with another contestant off the coast of the Dominican Republic on May 11. Court documents obtained by CBC News revealed that a tourist boat collided with Floros, causing severe injuries to his legs.
After the accident, Floros was initially treated at a local medical facility before being transferred to a hospital in Miami for further surgeries and a 61-day recovery period. Graphic images of Floros post-accident were published by TMZ, showcasing the extent of his injuries.
Skai TV, the broadcaster of Survivor Greece, announced the immediate suspension of the show and offered support to Floros for his treatment and rehabilitation. However, Floros claims he did not receive adequate assistance from the production company.
In a statement to TheWrap, Floros expressed his disappointment with the lack of support and care he received, stating that his life changed drastically due to the incident. The lawsuit, filed in Miami-Dade Circuit Court, names AcunMedya, AcunMedya Global, Acun LLC, Turkish businessman Acun Ilicali, and the parent company of Skai TV as defendants.
The legal documents include testimonies from Floros and other contestants detailing the events leading to the accident. Allegations suggest that the production team failed to implement safety measures despite the known risks of high-speed boat traffic in the area.
Floros and another contestant were engaging in fishing activities when the boat struck Floros, leading to life-altering consequences. Malliaros, the fellow contestant, highlighted the lack of protection for the cast members and the boat’s delayed response to the incident.
Floros expressed his disbelief that such a life-changing event occurred during a reality show competition. Although Survivor Greece shares its name with the popular U.S. series, it is not affiliated with it. The lawsuit filed by Floros’s legal team in Florida emphasizes the responsibility of the production team in ensuring contestant safety.
Efforts to obtain comments from AcunMedya regarding the lawsuit were unsuccessful at the time of publication. Apart from Survivor Greece, AcunMedya has produced various international versions of the show in countries such as Turkey, Mexico, Romania, and Germany.
