“Political Writer Reflects on Right-wing Exploitation of Anti-Migrant Sentiments”

Date:

Political writer Paul Routledge, known for his work at the Mirror since 1998, reflects on the recurring trend of Right-wing politicians using anti-migrant sentiments for political gain.

The historical context of exploiting migrant issues by Right-wing figures is not a new phenomenon, with Nigel Farage currently capitalizing on public concerns surrounding migrant arrivals.

In the past, attitudes towards migration have fluctuated. Initially, post-World War II, migration from Commonwealth countries like India and the Caribbean was well-received due to their contributions to the war effort and filling labor shortages in sectors such as the NHS. However, as migrant numbers increased, so did tensions, leading to racially-motivated violence in various regions.

Political actions, such as the Commonwealth Immigration Act of 1962 and the infamous racially-charged election victory of Peter Griffiths in 1964, further fueled societal divides. Subsequent efforts by Harold Wilson’s government to combat bigotry through the Race Relations Act of 1965 were met with mixed success.

The controversial “Rivers of Blood” speech by Enoch Powell in 1968 intensified anti-immigrant sentiments, resonating with a significant portion of the population. This divisive rhetoric continued to influence political discourse, notably aiding in Ted Heath’s unexpected electoral victory in 1970.

The legacy of Powellism persisted into the 21st century, with figures like Nigel Farage and Norman Tebbit echoing similar sentiments on immigration. Even today, politicians like Boris Johnson and Keir Starmer face criticism for their stances on migration, highlighting the enduring impact of divisive language in public dialogue.

Amidst an increasingly polarized society, the call for politicians to prioritize decency and humanity in their discourse remains crucial, emphasizing the responsibility they hold in shaping societal attitudes towards migrants and fostering unity.
