Sokvin Vann found herself stuck in a routine nearly four years ago. Encouraged by her brother, she channeled her love for K-pop and the popular boy band BTS into creating BTS Army Toronto. Despite facing personal tragedy following her brother’s passing, Vann, now 43, turned the local fan club into a thriving community. The group hosts events, fundraisers, and supports local Korean businesses, with the upcoming return of BTS to Toronto being a highly anticipated event.
The BTS Army Toronto, co-run by Vann and her 24-year-old son Jordan, has grown to include around 10 dedicated members. Vann expressed that the community has not only fostered friendships but also provided a sense of understanding and passion for music, which she finds to be the most rewarding aspect of her involvement.
As part of their Arirang World Tour, BTS is set to perform two sold-out shows at Rogers Stadium in Toronto this weekend. With a fan base known for their deep devotion and extensive knowledge of the band, BTS’s music, and its members, the excitement surrounding the upcoming shows is palpable.
Vann highlighted the band’s meaningful lyrics that delve into topics such as mental health and personal growth as a significant factor behind fans’ unwavering support. She also mentioned her new business venture, Idol Konnect, which offers consulting and event planning services for K-pop artists, stemming from her work with BTS Army Toronto.
BTS, which recently completed mandatory military service for its seven members, is embarking on a global tour that includes 88 shows across 34 cities in 23 countries. Vann, who has attended multiple BTS concerts in the U.S., expressed her excitement for the band’s return to Toronto after their previous concerts were canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic.
The anticipation for the upcoming concerts has fans like Aira Uy eagerly awaiting the long-awaited event. The City of Toronto has even agreed to temporarily co-name a section of Yonge Street as “BTS Boulevard” in honor of the band’s visit.
With the official BTS merchandise pop-up store bustling with fans and excitement building up for the weekend shows, the BTS Army Toronto is actively preparing various activities and events to engage fans and enhance their concert experience. As fans eagerly await the performances, Vann looks forward to the unique and intimate concert experience that BTS is known to deliver, along with the possibility of surprise performances.
