Two Canadian researchers have been recognized in a global image competition that showcases ecological research through photography. The 2026 joint BMC Ecology and Evolution and BMC Zoology image competition honored 11 photos from researchers worldwide at different career stages. These images capture animals in their natural habitats, scientists and students conducting ecological research, and various natural scenes.
Liam Brennan, a master’s student and photographer at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), won the research in action category with his photo titled “Intertidal education.” Allen (Haolun) Tian, a post-doctoral researcher affiliated with Queen’s University, Hangzhou Normal University, and Zhejiang University in China, secured the “protecting our planet” category with his image titled “A bridge between past and present.”
According to Brennan, these images play a crucial role in building public trust in environmental education and ecological research. He captured “Intertidal education” while overseeing undergraduate students monitoring coastal fish species in St. Andrews, N.B., emphasizing the moment of curiosity on the students’ faces under the night sky.
Tian’s photo, “A bridge between past and present,” showcases the Long Sault Parkway connecting 11 islands in the upper St. Lawrence River. The composition of 33 drone photos offers a fish-eye view of the region, highlighting the impact of human activities on ecosystems.
Both researchers emphasize the importance of using images to foster natural empathy and convey the significance of ecological studies. Through visually documenting their research, they aim to engage the public and emphasize the value of environmental conservation efforts.
The image competition also recognized other outstanding entries, including “Window to the Wetlands” by Sritam Kumar Sethy, “A space for frogs” by Ryan Wagner, “Giant cuttlefish in breeding battle” by Victor Huertas, and more. These images capture various aspects of nature, wildlife, and ecological research, showcasing the beauty and importance of our natural world.
