Millions of individuals across the nation are set to enjoy the August summer bank holiday today, marking the final extended break before the Christmas season in England and Wales. As summer draws to a close, many are already contemplating planning their vacations for the following year to make the most of their time off around the bank holidays scheduled for 2026. The RAC’s most recent data predicts a significant 17.6 million car journeys during the August bank holiday, with a large number of people driving back home today in preparation for the return to work tomorrow.
Nick Mullender, the team leader for RAC’s mobile servicing and repairs, highlighted the enthusiasm for weekend getaways before Christmas, with nearly 18 million drivers gearing up for trips. Increased road traffic during this period may lead to more vehicle breakdowns, particularly if the weather is favorable and spur-of-the-moment trips to popular destinations become prevalent. Major routes to airports and coastal areas, especially in the South East and South West regions, are anticipated to experience heavy congestion. Travelers planning journeys through these zones are advised to depart early or be ready for potential delays.
