With 11 nominations for her album “Confessions II” and its accompanying film, Madonna is the most nominated artist at the upcoming ceremony. Taylor Swift, who holds the record for the most VMA wins as a solo artist, follows Madonna with nine nominations for her album “The Life of a Showgirl” and the music video “The Fate of Ophelia.” Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande received seven nominations each, trailing behind Swift.
Madonna previously led the VMA nominations in 1990 and 1998 during her “Vogue” and “Ray of Light” eras. Her memorable 1984 VMA performance of “Like a Virgin,” where she wore a wedding dress and a “Boy Toy” belt buckle, remains a significant moment in music history, pushing the boundaries of cable television.
Among Madonna’s nominations are video of the year, artist of the year, and song and collaboration of the year for “Bring Your Love,” featuring Sabrina Carpenter. The video for “Confessions” will compete for the coveted video of the year award against Taylor Swift’s “Ophelia,” Ariana Grande’s “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” Sabrina Carpenter’s “Tears,” Bruno Mars’s “I Just Might,” and Gener8ion and Yung Lean’s “Storm.”
Voting for 13 categories is open to the public this year, with the winners set to be revealed during the live broadcast of the ceremony on September 27, airing on CBS, MTV, and streaming on Paramount+.
