Large portions of western Europe are experiencing extreme heat once again, with Britain and France now facing their fifth heatwaves of an extraordinary summer that could potentially set new records. Meteorologists in the U.K. are anticipating temperatures to soar up to 38 C in central and southeast England, potentially marking the hottest day of the year. The previous highest temperature this year was registered on June 26 at 38 C in eastern England. The U.K.’s Met Office highlighted earlier this week that only average conditions are required for the remainder of August to surpass last year’s record for the hottest year.
In France, temperatures are expected to climb even higher, reaching up to 40 C in central and southern regions and 38 C in Paris. The scorching weather has made working conditions extremely challenging in hospitals in Britain, with reports of nurses collapsing from heat exhaustion, according to the Royal College of Nursing.
Nicola Ranger, the college’s chief executive and general secretary, expressed concern, stating, “When nursing staff are collapsing due to heat-related issues, it underscores the significant challenges they are facing.” The lack of adequate air conditioning outside of commercial premises and offices in both countries has further exacerbated the situation.
Both Britain and France are grappling with widespread drought conditions, leading to dried-up crops and depleted rivers, intensifying pressure on water resources for households, agriculture, and the environment. Southern Water, responsible for water supplies in southern England, has requested a rare drought order to restrict non-essential water usage, citing an unprecedented lack of rainfall threatening water availability in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Authorities in both countries are on high alert for wildfires amid the prolonged dry spell, with firefighters in Britain battling blazes, including one in the New Forest in southern England.
As the land continues to parch with no relief in sight, the U.K. and France are on alert for potential wildfires, with England and Wales already recording 1,017 wildfires this year. Prime Minister Andy Burnham is considering a ban on disposable barbecues to mitigate the risk of further wildfires in the U.K. amidst the ongoing heatwave.
In France, firefighters are grappling with multiple blazes, including recent fires in the northern Pas-de-Calais and Brittany regions. The heightened fire risk has prompted demands for additional resources and personnel, with firefighters threatening to strike to address the challenges posed by extreme weather events.
