Following a series of intense summer thunderstorms in Ottawa-Gatineau, thousands of customers are facing power outages on Thursday morning. The storms swept through the region on Wednesday, with a particularly severe one hitting around 10:30 p.m., bringing heavy rain and strong winds.
The Ottawa International Airport weather station reported 22 millimetres of rain after 10 p.m. on Wednesday, along with a peak wind gust of 107 km/h, the strongest recorded this year. As of 8 a.m. Thursday, approximately 8,000 customers in Ottawa and Gatineau were without power. The affected areas include Woodroffe Avenue, Merivale Road, and Aylmer.
Despite the outages, there are not many reported issues with Hydro One services in the region. An additional 24 millimetres of rain fell on Monday, mainly during storms, further contributing to the challenging weather conditions. July marked the rainiest month on record in Ottawa, with about 282 millimetres of rainfall, primarily due to the significant storm on July 1 that caused widespread flooding and lasting impact on the community.
