Athletes are standing out at the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games in Corner Brook this week, with a team of more than 300 volunteers clad in orange shirts working behind the scenes to ensure smooth operations.
Wednesday marked the turnover day for the Games, as the second wave of athletes arrived in the city. Sporting events are set to resume on Wednesday evening.
Duane Huxter has been occupied with organizing merchandise for the athletes at the Corner Brook Civic Centre, where he has been diligently folding t-shirts for over a week.
Reflecting on his involvement, Huxter shared, “I initially planned to spend just a brief time organizing some merchandise last Monday. However, I haven’t returned home since then.”
Volunteers are actively engaged in various aspects of the Games, from collaborating with local authorities to coordinate logistics to ensuring the smooth conduct of the games at different venues.
Dave Campbell, the games director with SportNL and a member of the Games host committee, emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving success.
Campbell stated, “The success of these events hinges on the dedication of volunteers. It’s inspiring to witness communities like Corner Brook and Stephenville coming together to support these events.”
Coordinating outfits for 10 teams is a significant task, but Huxter recognizes the impact it can have on creating lasting memories for athletes.
Despite playing a minor role in events like the opening ceremonies, Huxter finds fulfillment in contributing to the athletes’ success.
He expressed, “While it’s demanding work and can be physically exhausting, my ultimate goal is for the athletes to leave this event with a positive experience. I take pride in playing a small part in that.”
Huxter also shared the satisfaction of seeing athletes proudly representing their regions during the opening ceremonies, knowing that he had personally prepared their team apparel.
