“Nepean Residents On Edge Amid Rising Flood Risks”

Date:

A resident of Nepean, Aroha DeForest, has been living in her home since the 1990s. She purchased sandbags after her property was flooded in 2023 and has since kept them as a permanent feature in her laneway following the recent heavy rainstorm on Canada Day. DeForest expressed that residents in the west end of Ottawa are anxious whenever there is a forecast for severe weather events like tornadoes or heavy rain.

The city experienced another 23.5 millimetres of rain on Monday, causing flooding in some homes for the second time in just over a month. DeForest mentioned that the situation has left everyone feeling on edge and stressed, making them vigilant about potential risks. She and her neighbors have decided to take turns staying at home or avoiding simultaneous vacations to ensure someone is always monitoring the situation.

DeForest highlighted the fear that arises when rain is predicted, unsure if it will lead to flooding in their own homes or their neighbors’. The recent flooding on Canada Day hit College, Bay, and Knoxdale-Merivale wards the hardest, damaging numerous basements and yards. Knoxdale-Merivale Coun. Sean Devine emphasized the ongoing need for support and expressed concerns about the extent of assistance required for affected households.

The city is currently reviewing its response to the Canada Day storm and exploring ways to enhance preparedness for future extreme weather occurrences. Devine stressed the importance of asking challenging questions regarding investments and sacrifices needed to mitigate such risks. Nepean resident Wesley Bova acknowledged the lingering worry among residents, despite the less severe impact of the recent storm. He shared the apprehension felt by his family whenever dark clouds loom, fearing a repeat of the devastating Canada Day flood.
