Raccoon Rabies Spreads in Quebec: Second Case Confirmed

Date:

Another case of raccoon rabies has been identified in Saint-Anicet, Quebec, marking the second incident this summer in the Montérégie region. According to Santé Québec Montérégie-Centre, three individuals had to undergo preventative treatment after being exposed to the infected cat. This discovery comes shortly after a similar case was reported in Godmanchester in the same region.

Health authorities emphasize the importance of ensuring that pets are up-to-date with their vaccinations, as raccoon rabies continues to spread across the Estrie, Montérégie, and Centre-du-Québec areas. Pet owners are advised to prevent their animals from freely roaming outdoors without supervision.

Officials urge the public to avoid contact with unfamiliar domestic and wild animals, regardless of their appearance or health status. In case of a bite, scratch, or potential exposure to a rabid animal’s saliva, individuals are instructed to wash the affected area for 10 to 15 minutes and immediately contact Info-Santé at 811 for prompt treatment.

Animals infected with rabies may display behavioral changes, aggression, biting tendencies, isolation, reduced appetite, excessive drooling, or unsteady movements. If a pet exhibits these symptoms, it should be isolated and examined by a veterinarian to minimize the risk of transmission.

The Environment Ministry recently confirmed the first case of raccoon rabies in Saint-Eugène-de-Grantham in the Centre-du-Québec region. Residents in the Eastern Townships, Montérégie, and Centre-du-Québec are urged to report any dead, injured, disoriented, or unusually aggressive raccoons, skunks, or foxes. Those outside these regions can report potentially rabid wildlife by contacting the Environment Ministry at 1 877 346-6763.
