Jannik Sinner, the top-ranked men’s tennis player globally, has pulled out of the Cincinnati Open due to a knee injury. Sinner, who last competed at Wimbledon where he secured his second consecutive title, also withdrew from the National Bank Open in Montreal last week. The 24-year-old Sinner, with five Grand Slam victories, is aiming to clinch the French Open to achieve a career Grand Slam.
In a statement released by tournament officials, the Italian player expressed, “After discussions with my medical team, I regret to announce my withdrawal from the Cincinnati Masters 1000 event due to ongoing issues with my right knee. Despite extensive efforts with my medical staff, I acknowledge that I am not yet fit to compete. I am disappointed to miss out on Cincinnati but am eager to return next year and am now focusing on preparing for the U.S. Open.”
Following Sinner’s decision, Carlos Alcaraz also opted out of the Cincinnati tournament citing a wrist injury. As a result, fans will miss watching the top two male players in action at the event, which kicks off on Saturday. Sinner, who triumphed in Cincinnati two years ago as a prelude to his U.S. Open victory, will not defend his title this time.
On the other hand, Alcaraz, who defeated Sinner in last year’s U.S. Open final, will aim to retain his title as the main draw of the tournament commences on August 30.
