“Marine Agent Patrolling US-Canada Border on Detroit River”

Date:

Marine interdiction agent Tim Thayer, wearing a black bulletproof vest and armed with a gun, smoothly starts the engines of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection boat with a total power of 1400 horses on the Detroit River. His duty involves patrolling the water borders between Canada and the United States in the Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois region.

The Detroit sector, where Thayer operates, covers a vast area solely bordered by water, extending 1,388 kilometers. This unique geography presents challenges as the Canadian city of Windsor lies to the south of Detroit, separated by the river, interconnected by bridges and a tunnel, with millions of people crossing annually.

During a routine patrol, Thayer scans the Windsor shoreline for any suspicious activities, emphasizing the flow of individuals, drugs, and firearms between the two countries in this region. The historical significance of the Windsor-Detroit corridor as a route for alcohol smuggling during the Prohibition era is noted.

While the illegal activities on the Detroit River have decreased since the Prohibition era, the high number of recreational boaters poses a challenge for law enforcement agencies. The importance of intelligence and partnerships in securing the area is highlighted by Kris Grogan, chief of external communications at CBP’s air and marine operations.

Recent statistics reveal that the majority of illegal drugs and firearms seized in the Detroit sector are trafficked northward into Canada. The flow of weapons and drugs from the United States to Canada is a growing concern, with a significant number of crime guns in Ontario traced back to the U.S.

Despite political tensions, U.S. border agents emphasize the continued strong working relationship with their Canadian counterparts. The mutual cooperation and challenges faced by both countries are symbolized by the presence of the Gordie Howe bridge, reflecting the complex bond between the United States and Canada.
