A TikTok content creator faced false accusations of being a British law student imprisoned for life in Dubai due to drug-related charges. Mia O’Brien, a British social media influencer, clarified the misunderstanding as she shares the same name as another Mia O’Brien, a British student sentenced to 25 years for possessing a significant amount of cocaine.
Despite residing in Liverpool and pleading not guilty, the law student Mia was incarcerated in Dubai Central Prison alongside other inmates. The similarity in names led to confusion on social media, with many mistakenly associating the TikToker with the imprisoned student.
Responding to queries in her comment section, TikToker Mia affirmed that she was not the individual involved in the Dubai drug case. The mix-up was evident as some users mistakenly linked her to the news coverage about the jailed Brit.
In a separate incident, another 23-year-old Mia O’Brien was fined £100,000 and imprisoned in Dubai Central prison for drug-related charges. Arrested along with her friend and her friend’s boyfriend, they faced accusations of drug trafficking. A GoFundMe page set up by Mia’s mother to aid her legal defense was removed for violating platform rules.
Subsequently, Mia’s mother resorted to sharing her bank details on Facebook to receive direct donations after GoFundMe’s deletion of the fundraising page. Expressing gratitude for the support, she emphasized the need for direct donations to avoid intermediary deductions.
The heartbroken mother highlighted Mia’s lack of criminal history and attributed the situation to a regrettable error influenced by misguided acquaintances.
