Celebrities Unite to End “Cruel” Two-Child Benefit Cap

Date:

More than 40 well-known personalities, including Arlene Phillips, Mark Bonnar, Jason Isaacs, and Bill Nighy, have united to urge the elimination of the “cruel” two-child benefit cap in the upcoming Budget. They penned a letter to Keir Starmer, coordinated by the Trussell foodbank charity, emphasizing the detrimental impact of the two-child limit on families and children.

The letter stressed the urgency of removing the two-child limit, which restricts social security assistance to two children, penalizing families and driving them to rely on food banks. Notable figures such as Simon Pegg, Stanley Tucci, Jodie Whittaker, Tyrone Mings, and Kalvin Phillips, among others, have also lent their support to this cause.

Levi Roots, the creator of Reggae Reggae sauce, highlighted his personal experience growing up in poverty and emphasized the need to eradicate the two-child limit to combat child poverty effectively. Additionally, actor Mark Bonnar criticized the welfare system for punishing children based on the number of siblings they have.

The celebrities emphasized that removing the two-child limit is crucial in protecting children from hunger, ensuring a better start in life, and improving their future prospects. They urged swift action to fulfill commitments to combating child poverty. Both Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves have indicated intentions to address the two-child benefit cap in the upcoming Budget announcement on November 26.

The two-child benefit limit, introduced in 2017, restricts financial support to the first two children in most households, leading to concerns about exacerbating child poverty issues. The government has outlined plans to address child poverty through initiatives such as the Child Poverty Taskforce and significant investments in children’s development programs.

In a joint statement, the celebrities reiterated the importance of eliminating the two-child limit to safeguard children’s well-being, emphasizing the immediate need for action to protect vulnerable families from further hardship.
