Railway Hero Samir Zitouni in Stable Condition After Train Attack

Date:

A significant update regarding the courageous railway worker who intervened in the Huntingdon train attack has been provided by the hospital. Samir Zitouni, aged 48, was repeatedly stabbed by the assailant on the LNER service on November 1 while trying to shield passengers onboard. Using a frying pan from the buffet area on the Doncaster to London service, the hero defended travelers from the attacker’s knife. Following the encounter, he was in critical condition and fighting for his life.

Samir, also known as Sam, is currently in stable condition and has been able to communicate with his wife for the first time since the traumatic incident. He regained consciousness on Thursday and is making positive strides in his recovery journey. Colleague Gemma Royce shared this update on a GoFundMe page created after the stabbing incident.

The fundraising page, which has raised over £38,000, conveyed Sam’s family’s deep appreciation for the support received. Sam’s wife revealed that he briefly woke up, allowing her to have a short conversation with him. While this development is encouraging, there is still a long road ahead in his recovery, and the family is grateful for the continued thoughts and prayers.

In a heartfelt message on Thursday, Samir’s wife, Eleni, expressed gratitude to the hospital staff, LNER colleagues, and the public for their assistance and well-wishes. She highlighted Sam’s courageous act of shielding others during the incident and emphasized his unwavering belief in humanity, describing him as their hero.

Following the emergency stop at Huntingdon, British Transport Police commended Samir’s actions, describing him as “nothing short of heroic.” Politicians have advocated for honoring the worker for his bravery and quick thinking in saving lives during the attack. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander praised Sam’s selfless actions and expressed best wishes to him and his family.

The suspect, Anthony Williams, was arrested by the police and is set to appear in court on Monday, facing charges of ten counts of attempted murder.
