Chocoholics have witnessed a significant surge in the prices of some holiday treats, with a spike of up to 72% compared to last year’s Christmas, as per recent research. The consumer group Which? has observed a notable increase in the costs of various seasonal essentials. This organization monitors over 25,000 food and beverage items in eight supermarkets throughout the year.
In a detailed analysis of specific product categories, chocolate emerged as the most impacted by inflation, experiencing an average price hike of 14.2% over the past year. Factors contributing to this rise include ongoing challenges in cocoa harvests and supply chain disruptions.
Among the notable price increases, a Lindt Lindor milk chocolate truffles treat box (37g) at Asda rose from £1.15 to £1.98, marking a substantial 72.2% increase from the previous year. Similarly, at Morrisons, the price of Lindt Milk Chocolate Teddy Christmas Tree Decorations surged from £3.50 in 2024 to £6, reflecting a 71.4% escalation.
Further price hikes were observed at Morrisons and Tesco, with products like Lindt Christmas milk chocolate Teddy and Terry’s Chocolate Orange Dark Ball increasing by significant margins. Additionally, the cost of Christmas turkeys, including various cuts and sizes, rose by 4.7% year-on-year.
External factors such as bird flu outbreaks and escalating operational expenses for farmers have contributed to individual price increases. For instance, a Tesco Finest Free Range Bronze Turkey Crown Medium (2.99kg) saw a price jump of £14.95, climbing from £53.82 to £68.77, equating to a 27.8% increase.
The latest data from Which? highlighted that Waitrose experienced the highest price surge at 6.2% over the year until November, while Asda maintained the lowest inflation rate at 3%, surpassing even discount competitors like Aldi and Lidl.
Reena Sewraz, the Retail Editor at Which?, emphasized that while general inflation figures may not fully represent the challenges faced by consumers during Christmas shopping, individual item prices have surged by up to 70% year-on-year. To save money during the festive season, shoppers are advised to explore budget-friendly options at Aldi, Lidl, and Asda, known for their low inflation rates and competitive pricing.
