Erin Patterson, known as the mushroom killer, showed little reaction as she received a life sentence without parole. The 50-year-old had denied involvement in the deaths of Don and Gail Patterson and Gail’s sister, Heather Wilkinson. However, following a nine-week trial, a jury convicted her of three counts of murder and one of attempted murder.
Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson, survived after undergoing a liver transplant but tragically, Don, Gail, and Heather succumbed to poisoning from death cap mushrooms served in beef Wellingtons during a lunch on July 29, 2023.
Appearing at the Supreme Court of Victoria on Monday, September 8 for sentencing, Patterson, dressed in a paisley top and tan jacket, seemed subdued, blinking frequently as her crimes were detailed in court. Throughout the sentencing, she appeared almost nodding off, seated between two guards in the courtroom.
After being sentenced to life with a minimum of 33 years behind bars, Patterson will return to the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre. Justice Beale mentioned the possibility of prolonged solitary confinement for her safety.
Patterson has until October 6 to appeal her conviction or sentence. Ian Wilkinson expressed gratitude to the police, especially the Homicide Squad and Detective Stephen Eppinstall, for their thorough investigation. He also thanked healthcare professionals for their care and encouraged kindness within the community.
