Chernobyl Survivor Killed in Russian Strike

Date:

A woman who survived the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and lost her husband in the event has tragically passed away in a Russian missile strike on an apartment building. Natalia Khodemchuk, aged 62, sustained severe burns covering 45% of her body during the attack and succumbed to her injuries.

Her late husband, Valery Khodemchuk, an engineer who perished in the Chernobyl explosion at the age of 35, was never found after being “vaporized.” Natalia, who survived the nuclear catastrophe nearly four decades ago, met her untimely demise in the recent strike launched by Russian forces.

In a related incident, the residence of Chernobyl engineer Oleksiy Ananenko, 66, known for his heroic actions in preventing further nuclear disaster in 1986, was also damaged in the missile attack in Kyiv. Ananenko, along with two other volunteers, bravely ventured into radioactive waters to avert a catastrophic event, earning him hero status in Ukraine in 2019.

The apartment block targeted by the Russian assault was housing Chernobyl survivors, including Natalia Khodemchuk. She became the seventh casualty of the devastating attacks that left 35 others injured in Kyiv, marking one of the most severe incidents in the ongoing conflict.

The Chernobyl disaster on April 26, 1986, resulted in the destruction of Reactor Number 4 at the Ukrainian nuclear plant, posing a significant threat to Europe. Ananenko, alongside his colleagues, played a crucial role in preventing further catastrophe by draining water from the cooling system, risking their lives in the process.

Despite facing health challenges, Ananenko’s wife Valentyna shared the harrowing experience of evacuating their apartment during the recent attack. The couple had previously fled Kyiv to avoid danger but returned, only to be caught in the deadly onslaught orchestrated by Russian forces.

The events surrounding the Chernobyl disaster and its aftermath continue to resonate, with individuals like Ananenko embodying bravery and selflessness in the face of adversity.
