Police in Glasgow city center have apprehended a suspect following an incident where a woman was reportedly attacked with a harmful substance. The emergency response unfolded on Buchanan Street just before 7pm on Sunday, with witnesses observing paramedics tending to the injured woman outside a local Sainsbury’s. To ensure public safety, bystanders were redirected to a nearby shop on Sauchiehall Street as the immediate vicinity was secured and placed on lockdown. The victim received assistance from store staff following the alleged assault.
A 51-year-old woman has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident, while a 46-year-old woman was taken to a hospital for treatment. Chief Inspector Stephen McManus expressed gratitude to the public for their cooperation, emphasizing that officers would be present in the area to address any concerns raised by the community.
Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene, noting the presence of liquid splashes on the street as authorities conducted searches and collected evidence, including items such as paper rolls that were sealed in bags and loaded into a police vehicle. According to reports, a disturbance near the store escalated, leading individuals towards the Buchanan Galleries, with one woman seeking refuge in Sainsbury’s, where the entrance was damaged.
Law enforcement personnel maintained a perimeter around the affected area, setting up privacy screens inside the store and at the entrance. Puddles of liquid were visible on the shop floor, accompanied by multiple water bottles. The exact cause of the incident remains unclear at this time.
