Tania Wise, a 23-year-old single mother who was eagerly awaiting the birth of her second child, had already shared the news at her baby shower that she was expecting a baby boy named Josiah. Despite the circumstances of her pregnancy, she made the decision to keep the baby and raise him on her own after initially considering an abortion following pressure from the man she was involved with, Jose Soto-Escalera.
Tragically, just days before her due date, Tania was found brutally murdered in a rural area of St Lucie County. The autopsy revealed that she had suffered severe head injuries and had her throat and jugular vein cut, leading to her death. As a result, her unborn baby, Josiah, also lost his life.
The community was shocked and devastated by the violent deaths of Tania and her baby. The police investigation led to the arrest of Soto-Escalera, who initially denied any involvement in the deaths. However, evidence such as internet search history, witness statements, and vehicle records pointed to his premeditated actions in planning and executing the murders.
During the trial, further evidence emerged, including recordings of Soto-Escalera discussing his relationship with Tania and his intentions to prevent his wife from finding out about the affair. Witness testimonies and phone records supported the prosecution’s case against him, ultimately leading to his conviction on two counts of first-degree murder.
In October, Soto-Escalera was sentenced to death for the murders of Tania and her unborn child. Despite the defense’s attempts to shift blame and present alternative theories, the jury found him guilty based on the overwhelming evidence against him. Tania’s loved ones expressed their grief in court, highlighting the loss felt by her surviving son and the tragedy of a life cut short just before the joy of welcoming a new family member.
