“6,000 Post Offices at Risk of Closure in Restructuring Plan”

Date:

Nearly 6,000 Post Offices are at risk of permanent closure as part of a significant restructuring plan. A recent Government consultation has disclosed that almost half of the existing 11,500 Post Offices are no longer profitable, especially those operating part-time or sharing space with other businesses.

The consultation recognizes that elderly residents in rural areas would be most affected by these potential closures. The ongoing Future of Post Office consultation, focusing on enhancing and modernizing the postal network, is set to conclude soon.

In a potential shift, the Government may redefine what constitutes a Post Office “branch,” potentially including “drop and collect” boxes as part of the network.

Post Office representatives have reassured that there are currently no planned closures and emphasize the importance of maintaining the current number of branches. The majority of Post Offices are managed independently by postmasters or in partnership with retailers like WH Smith, Tesco, Morrisons, and the Co-Op.

The Department for Business spokesperson has indicated a preference for maintaining the size and structure of the current network, acknowledging the need to explore various options for the Post Office’s long-term sustainability. A recent green paper launched in July is examining the operational strategies for the organization.

The Post Office is proposing expanding its services to include pharmacy prescription collection, digital ID services, and business consultations. Additionally, they are advocating for tailored tax relief and the extension of banking and parcel services to include support for small businesses.

Neil Brocklehurst, Post Office chief executive, highlighted the necessity for adaptation in a rapidly evolving digital landscape to meet customer demands and drive revenue for branch operators.
